The Christian Education Endowment Fund was created in 1991 by a generous gift from Dick and Norma Sarns. The intent was to create an on-going fund that would supplement, enrich, enhance, and augment the church's Christian Education ministry to the children, youth, families, and adults of the congregation at West Side United Methodist Church. The fund was not to be used to replace the regular budget of the Christian Education program of the church. The corpus of the fund is held and managed by the Ann arbor Area Community Foundation, which forwards the earnings of the fund to the church. The principal of the fund cannot be expended. The Advisory Committee was established to make recommendations for the expenditures from the fund's earnings to the Christian Education Committee, and through them, the Church Council.
Over the years, the monies from this endowment fund has purchased TV/VCRs and carts, tables and chairs for the classrooms, toddler room furniture and toys, bookshelves, funding for West Side Renewal, and scholarships. The Scholarship Committee finds and gives active members of West Side two $1000 scholarships for youth. Last year, we were blessed to offer two $500 scholarships for adults.
West Side has several other Endowment Funds: The General Endowment Fund, The Garden Endowment Fund, and The Memorial Endowment Fund. The United Methodist Foundation of the Detroit Annual Conference manages all these funds.
If you are looking for ways to provide long-term support to West Side, or are performing estate and tax planning, you may want to give consideration to endowment fund gifts.
